Abstract

Apoptosis has become one of the most extensively studied topics in cell biology in the last few years. Obtained data suggest that programmed cell death may play a role in development of vasculature and pathophysiology of its diseases. Apoptosis has pathological implications both when increased or decreased. The aim of this article is to review key points regarding the apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells: its regulation and possible role in development and therapy of atherosclerosis, hypertension, restenosis after arterial injury and aortic aneurysm.
