Abstract
In the present work the authors describe the current knowledge on eosinophilic cationic protein and its role in pathophysiology and diagnostics of diseases of the alimentary tract. Eosinophilic cationic protein is a basic product of active eosinophiles. Its concentration in the serum and affected tissues is elevated in allergy, eosinophilic inflammation of various segments of alimentary tract, inflammatory bowel disease. The magnitude of this elevation correlates with gravity of pathophysiological process and can be used in the diagnosis and monitoring disease.
