Outline
Age-related neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, dementia-related syndromes and other progressive neurological conditions, represent a growing clinical and public health challenge. Their increasing prevalence, driven largely by population aging, is accompanied by substantial diagnostic, therapeutic and socioeconomic burdens. Despite major progress in neuroscience, effective disease-modifying interventions remain limited, and many conditions are still diagnosed at relatively advanced stages, when neuronal damage is already substantial.
A better understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration is essential for identifying clinically relevant biomarkers, validated therapeutic targets, and innovative treatment strategies. Recent advances in neurochemistry, molecular biology, omics technologies, experimental pharmacology and translational neuroscience have opened new perspectives for drug discovery and therapeutic development. These include small molecules, natural compounds, biologics, peptides, gene- and RNA-based approaches, drug repurposing strategies and advanced drug delivery systems designed to overcome biological barriers such as the blood–brain barrier.
This article collection aims to highlight recent progress in the understanding of mechanisms involved in age-related neurodegenerative disorders and their relevance to diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Particular emphasis will be placed on studies that connect molecular or mechanistic findings with clinical relevance. Contributions addressing clinically useful biomarkers, validated disease targets, therapeutic candidates supported by experimental or clinical evidence, and innovative delivery systems tested in disease-relevant models are especially encouraged.
The collection welcomes original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, focused reviews and short communications that provide a clear translational message. Priority will be given to manuscripts that demonstrate how mechanistic insights may contribute to improved diagnosis, therapeutic decision-making, drug development, prevention strategies or patient outcomes.
Submitted manuscripts should be original, not previously published and not under consideration elsewhere. All submissions must meet internationally accepted standards for scientific reporting and follow the author guidelines, peer-review procedures, and editorial requirements of Advances in Clinical and Experimental Medicine.
Scope of the collection
Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts related to, but not limited to, the following areas:
- Molecular and cellular mechanisms of aging and neurodegeneration
- Neurotransmitter alterations and neurochemical pathways in health and disease
- Neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, excitotoxicity and mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative disorders
- Epigenetic, transcriptional and molecular remodeling in aging brain disorders
- Biomarkers for early diagnosis, disease monitoring and therapeutic response
- Novel therapeutic targets and drug discovery approaches in neurodegenerative diseases
- Small molecules, natural compounds, peptides and biotechnology-based products with therapeutic potential
- Gene-, RNA- and biologic-based therapeutic strategies
- Drug repurposing supported by experimental, translational or clinical evidence
- Brain-targeted drug delivery systems, including nanocarriers, microparticles, microneedle-based approaches and blood–brain barrier-focused technologies
- Pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions with mechanistic or biomarker-based rationale
- Nutritional and lifestyle-related interventions linked to measurable biological or clinical outcomes
- Translational models relevant to neurodegenerative disease mechanisms and therapeutic testing

Submission process
Authors should first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) with a working title and structured abstract of the proposed original article or review to the Handling Editor: moradikor@neuroscience.edu.ge. All EOIs will be reviewed by the Handling Editor and Editor-in-Chief, and selected authors will be invited to submit full manuscripts via the standard ACEM editorial platform.
All accepted papers will undergo full peer review by at least two independent reviewers.
