Highlights

The “Highlights” section is the first in the main body of the paper – it should appear before the Background/Introduction section.

Purpose of the “Highlights” section

The "Highlights" section provides a concise summary of the most significant findings and relevance of the article. It aims to help readers quickly understand the key aspects of the study and enhance the article’s visibility in scientific databases.

Guidelines for preparing “Highlights”

1. Number of points: Include 3–5 bullet points.

2. Length of each point: Maximum 20–25 words per bullet point (avoid complex sentences).

3. Style:

  • Short, one-sentence bullet points containing key information.
  • Use specific, scientific or technical terms.
  • Use active verbs, e.g. ‘identify’, ‘highlight’, ‘suggest’, ‘demonstrate’.
  • Avoid abbreviations and technical jargon unless commonly understood.
  • Used keywords should be easily understood by search engines (e.g. ‘breast cancer relapse’, ‘PTSD biomarkers’).

4.  Example of a “Highlights” section

  • The first study demonstrated the link between X and Y in patients with disease Z.
  • A novel method A increased the precision of results by 30%.
  • Results suggest that therapy T reduces symptoms by 50% within six months.
  • Implementing strategy B could improve treatment outcomes in population C.

5. Clinical context: If the study has direct clinical applications, at least one point should highlight this.
